John Buchan
1875-1940
John Buchan -– 1st Baron Tweedsmuir -–published his first novel ‘Sir Quixote (of the Moors)’ in 1895 and his first biography ‘Sir Walter Raleigh’ in 1897. Buchan debuted the all-action hero Richard Hannay in 1915 with ‘The 39 Steps’, and then across 4 further novels. Hannay was first portrayed on film by Robert Donat in the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock adaption, and on radio in 1938 by Orson Welles.
John Buchan died in Montreal while serving as Governor General of Canada and is buried near his Oxfordshire home Elsfield Manor in St. Thomas of Canterbury Churchyard, Elsfield.
